When it comes to devising early years training, nurseries are often well-placed to do the job themselves. Child Base is proving the point with its development of SOUND Foundations - a programme designed to promote self-esteem, communication skills and creativity in young children.

The programme recently came under the scrutiny of child expert Professor Melhuish, a prime mover in the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) study. His independent analysis is expected to be published later this year and will evaluate the nursery chain's thoughtful and cohesive approach to staff development.

Good practice, underpinned by a clear strategy, is certainly in evidence at Child Base's Highbury Lodge Nursery, in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. A peep into each room in the large Victorian house reveals children who are busy, purposeful and clearly absorbed in their activities.
