Bailey's story

Inclusion strategies for a child with special needs are described by Jane Cole in our series on the Celebrating Young Children project Bailey has a physical disability caused by cerebral palsy and, as a result, health services have helped him since he was a baby. This help has included regular work at home with an occupational therapist, Lesley Platts, who is part of the child development team in Islington, London.

When he was two years old, Lesley mentioned to Bailey's mother, Leyla, that there was a very good nursery in the area, which had several places for children with complex learning difficulties and disabilities.

Bailey had lots of company at home, but his older sister, Danielle, and her friends sometimes needed reminding to take him with them to play. Leyla wanted Bailey to mix with children of his own age, so she went to visit the nursery. She found it welcoming and could see the many opportunities it could offer, so Bailey joined the birth- to-three base there.
