Balls backs EYFS as it makes the statute books

Ensuring that childminders have the skills in place to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) continues to be a challenge, Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, said as the framework became statutory on Monday.

Speaking at Fellowship House Children's Centre in Newham, London, hesaid that the EYFS will give every child, especially those from adisadvantaged background, an equal right to the best quality care andlearning to prepare them for school.

'I'm really pleased the National Childminding Association is backingwhat we are doing with the EYFS, because it is really important thatevery child has the chance to develop whether they are in a nursery, aschool nursery or with a childminder. But it is a greater challenge tomake sure that childminders have the skills and the training to deliverthe aims of the EYFS. Talking to the childcare co-ordinator in Newham,it has been working really hard to make sure that every setting, including childminders, has training. Over the coming months, as EYFSbeds down, we're confident we can continue to improve the quality andconsistency of provision.'
