Ban on smacking

A ban on smacking children is being considered by the Welsh Assembly government, despite being ruled out for the UK (News, 1 November).

The Welsh Assembly voted in favour of banning smacking in 2004, but themove carried no legal weight. Welsh Secretary Peter Hain would have toagree to transfer the power of safeguarding vulnerable children to theAssembly before a ban would be possible.
