The criticism was made at the AGM of the National Campaign for Nursery Education (NCNE) in London. Delegates passed a resolution urging the Government 'to monitor carefully the primary schools proposed for beacon status, to ensure that nursery and reception class practice within the school is fully consistent with the curriculum guidance for the Foundation Stage, and is providing a model of good indoor and outdoor learning and teaching within this vital Key Stage'. Some members abstained from voting because they felt there was not yet enough evidence to support it.
The NCNE also stressed that the literacy and numeracy strategies have no place in the Foundation Stage. Another resolution that was carried said 'practitioners working with three-to six-year-olds should be free to follow the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage and should not have to refer to documents which are not consistent with the principles and expectations of this guidance'.
