Behaviour alarm over nursery pupils

More than half of the children attending nurseries in Belfast have been classified as having behavioural difficulties. According to a report by the Belfast Education and Library Board, Behaviour in a Learning City, 52 per cent of pre-school children attending early years provision in Belfast have been classified as being on the behavioural continuum.

According to a report by the Belfast Education and Library Board, Behaviour in a Learning City, 52 per cent of pre-school children attending early years provision in Belfast have been classified as being on the behavioural continuum.

The report said, 'Many children experiencing social and emotional behavioural difficulties/SEN are first identified on entry to nursery.

Within the nursery sector, resources are not always available to meet the needs of children who have behavioural difficulties.'

The report noted that 'of particular concern' were children who had autism spectrum disorders and/ or moderate learning difficulties that had not been diagnosed, 'and are consequently not supported with any additional resources'.
