Better nursery food demanded

More than 3,370 people have signed a petition calling for the Government to put nutritional standards in place for nurseries.

The campaign, called Better Nursery Food Now, was launched in October byfood company Organix and the Soil Association after a report found thatsome nurseries were spending just 25p per child on a meal (News, 22October).

Campaigners want the Government to adopt the Caroline Walker Trust'sguidelines for children under five, and for a minimum of 50p to be spentfor every nursery child's lunch.

Joanna Quinn, PR manager for Organix, said, 'The number of signatures isalways increasing, which is very encouraging. In the New Year we aregoing to continue to lobby the Government and we are also going topublish resources such as recipes and tips on our website that nurseriesand parents can use.
