Biodegradable nappies

Disposable nappies are becoming more and more of a problem, and because they take up landfill space councils are seeking to impose increasing costs on nurseries who use them. Changing to towelling nappies is the obvious answer, but if you find you need to keep a supply of disposables in the nursery you should make sure they are biodegradable. Moltex Oko disposables come in packaging that is completely biodegradable, while the nappy itself, made of wood pulp, degrades over two years if it is placed in a landfill site. Some plastic is involved to provide the waterproof protection needed from a nappy, but this is 'second generation'

Moltex Oko disposables come in packaging that is completely biodegradable, while the nappy itself, made of wood pulp, degrades over two years if it is placed in a landfill site. Some plastic is involved to provide the waterproof protection needed from a nappy, but this is 'second generation'

plastic that breaks down to the point where just a few thin strands remain.

Moltex Oko nappies are available from Smilechild, which is at pains to point out that there is little point in using a biodegradable nappy if you wrap it in a plastic bag after use - the bag will obviously prevent the contents from degrading. So Smilechild stocks biodegradable bin bags and nappy sacks to combat this problem, as well as compost bins for the garden.
