Bring it home

Are you a Janet or John graduate? The learn-to-read characters last published 25 years ago are relaunched this month for the 21st century with street cred and a rethink on role models. But the real twist is that the new Janet and John scheme is designed to be taught to children at home by parents and carers, rather than at school. The collection by educational publisher Star Kids will include 30 books covering reading writing and maths. The new books already have been criticised as dull, unecessary and out of keeping with the current stress on reading through phonics. But the nostalgia they bring out in grown-ups could make early reading a more enthusiastic business for nannies and their charges together.
