Pop-ups

Children love the experience of the page jumping out at them and this certainly happens in The Very Friendly Firefly by Jack Tickle, from the Peek-A-Boo series at Little Tiger Press, (priced 7.99 each, hardback). A nocturnal animal or animals pop up on each double-page spread, accompanied by a few lines of rhyming information. There are eight different creatures to enjoy, including some that don't usually feature in books for younger children, like fennec foxes and cicadas. There are seven other titles in this animal-themed series, including The Very Clever Crocodile which contains some of the largest, most flamboyant pop-ups you've ever seen. The jaws of the three piranhas span the entire width of their double-page spread and the crocodile's head rises around 15cm out of the page towards you, so be warned!
