BUPA propelling chain expansion

The Teddies Nurseries chain has opened more than one new nursery per month since it was bought by BUPA Childcare for Pound15.5m in August last year. Teddies at that time had 18 day nurseries based in and around London with some 500 staff. Each nursey provides between 44 and 70 places for children aged between three months and five years.

In the past 11 months, BUPA has opened a further 13 nurseries under the Teddies banner and by the end of the year, there will be another five. The latest acquisitions are two nurseries in Southampton.

Carole Edmond, BUPA's head of childcare, 'We want to grow at a rate that's sustainable.

Soo we're looking at how the business evolves from being an operator of 18 nurseries to double that size.'
