Busy Bees deal 'landmark'

The acquisition of 88 Leapfrog nurseries by Busy Bees and its parent company, ABC Learning centres, marks a 'significant landmark' on the road to a nationally recognised daycare brand, a leading childcare economist said last week.

Philip Blackburn, an economist at Laing and Buisson, welcomed the £31.2m purchase from Nord Anglia and said, 'I think it's quite exciting. Finally we have a company, a large global organisation, that is pretty ambitious and has got the money and inclination to become the leading player in the UK market.'

He said there were not many recognised brands, at least at national level, in the UK childcare sector, and that having one would bolster parents' confidence in quality provision.

John Woodward, group managing director of Busy Bees, which was taken over by Australian-based ABC in a £70m deal last December, said the Leapfrog acquisition marked a step on the road to a national network of local nurseries.
