Call to back Modern Apprenticeships

* The Government and the Learning Skills Council has urged childcare employers in England to back Modern Apprenticeships. These training programmes are for people aged 16 to 24 who have left full-time education. They are a combination of on- and off-the-job training and result in key skills, a technical certificate and NVQs. They can be pursued at Foundation and Advanced levels, and last between one and three years.

Christina Richards, operations director at Academy Childcare, said, 'Early years students leave college filled with theory, but are often not practically equipped or experienced for the job. Modern Apprenticeships break down this barrier between knowledge and practical application by allowing individuals to gain both at the same time.'

Employers wanting more information about Modern Apprenticeships can call the helpline on 08000 150400 or see the website www.realworkrealpay.info.
