Childcare employers

12 March 2003

Childcare employers are being urged by the Government and the Learning and Skills Council to back Modern Apprenticeships following the launch of a new national Modern Apprenticeship taskforce. The taskforce will look at how to involve young people in MAs and engage the support of employers, particularly in the health and care sectors. Speaking at its launch, Chancellor Gordon Brown said, 'Skills are Britain's Achilles heel - eight million people have below Level 2 qualifications, including 20 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds.' Christina Richards, operations director at Academy Childcare, said, 'Early years students leave college filled with theory, but are often not practically equipped or experienced for the job. Modern apprenticeships break down the barrier between knowledge and practical application by allowing individuals to gain both at the same time.'
