Case study

Name: Lucy Hallam Age: 23
Name: Lucy Hallam

Age: 23

Locations visited: Lanzarote, Kos, Turkey

Company: Mark Warner (Virgin)

Job title: Nanny in Kos, then head of toddlers in Turkey

Typical day: Nannies start at 8.30am for set up, the children arrive at 9am. We do morning activities with a snack at 10am, circle time is 12-1pm, lunch is 1-3pm and the parents pick them up for this. Afternoon activities are from 3pm onwards until 4.45pm when we'll do supper. We finish at 5.30pm and clean up creches which may take half an hour. one to three nights a week we do 'room listening'.

Qualifications: NNEB, sign language, basic first aid and food and hygiene certificates.

Training: I went for 'Start-up' at the resort, which meant I did extra training, team building and stuff like that. I recommend doing that.

Pluses: Mark Warner gave us access to all the sports because we were staff; now I can sail and take children out to do that. I met loads of people and it was just a great opportunity to do something unique, and it was sunny! Also, all my friends and family came to visit and they got discount flights.

Minuses: None really, you could get lonely but then people can come out and visit you.

Advice: Go prepared, it is very hard work and the children get easily irritated in the heat. But if you have a positive attitude you will have the time of your life.

Would you do it again? I already have!
