Case Study - Foundation Degree

Charlotte Stanton had started out studying with the Open University but felt that the foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies offered by Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies was a quicker route to a qualification which would ultimately help her to achieve her goal of becoming an early years teacher. 'I was working as a nursery nurse in a school at the time, and this two-year, part-time course required me to attend college one afternoon a week and put in as much evening study as I could. It was quite a hard slog although well worth doing, as I am now signed up for a BA in Early Childhood Studies, which will involve one more year of full-time study.

'I really enjoyed the curriculum-based maths and science options and found the lesson planning very useful. We created our own research pilots to find ways of enhancing the children's learning and behaviour. There were also research projects which looked at children in their social context and provided insights into dealing with parents and families. We also studied how children are affected by current Government policy and legislation, which was undoubtedly one of the toughest parts of the course.'
