Case study: full-time study

* Jennifer Brice, 42, was a full-time mother of five until she embarked on a DCE course at Barnet College, north London, almost two years ago. Her husband is also retraining, after redundancy, so 'we're on a very tight budget,' says Jennifer, but pressures of time have been far more manageable.

Her children are aged seven to 14. The college day fits around the school day and assignments are often set during the school holidays, so, Jennifer says, 'I'm still there for them'.

She still has to organise her time well, though. She assigns herself tasks for the week and plans when she will have to study late. Part of her study routine is joining some of her children around the table when they get home from school. They do their homework; she does her coursework.
