Case study: picture perfect

A digital camera has been in constant use at Westfield Day Nursery since it was bought two years ago, bringing benefits to children, practitioners and parents. Photographs taken at the nursery in Easingwold, near York, form an important element of the nursery's ICT work, which falls within knowledge and understanding of the world and encourages children to become familiar with everyday technology. All the children are encouraged to learn how to use the camera and observe as the photographs are printed off on the computer.

'It's another way of using technology within the nursery,' says nursery owner Judith Tubb. 'Taking photographs and printing them off is interesting for the children to do.' Children and/or staff take photographs to support other parts of the curriculum, for example, recording the growth of a seed. The children are encouraged to record their work in photographs and staff use photography as part of their documentation.
