Cash bonus snubs nursery teachers

Nursery teachers and headteachers who return to work after a break are losing out on a 4,000 'Welcome Back' bonus which is being offered to primary and secondary teachers. The Department for Education and Skills introduced the bonus scheme with the aim of tempting back teachers who have taught fewer than 15 days in the year to March 31 2001.

Hilary Harris, who is to take up a position as head of Moss Hall nursery in Finchley, London, this autumn after four years out of the profession, expressed outrage at the Government's decision to exclude nursery teachers from the scheme.

She told the Times Educational Supplement last week, 'It is just such a kick in the teeth for us in early years. What makes me less important? I am well-qualified and experienced.
