Five cards with a picture of a caterpillar on each and a number from1 to 5. On the reverse, a picture of a butterfly and a number from 5 to 1, e.g. number 1 caterpillar will have number 5 butterfly on the back, and so on.
Step by step
* After talking about how caterpillars change into butterflies, introduce the following rhyme to the children.
Five little caterpillars sat upon a leaf,
One little caterpillar fell asleep,
When it woke up it found it could fly
Now there are four caterpillars and one butterfly.

* Line up five children, each holding a card with the caterpillar showing and with the numbers in descending order.
* As you say the rhyme the children move to form another line, turning the cards to reveal a butterfly and a new line of numbers.
