Centre areas see learning goal rise

Communication skills and language development among young children in Nottingham have risen significantly in the past 12 months, new figures show.

The figures cover attainment for children in children's centre areas, although there is no correlating data to confirm how many of thechildren attended Sure Start or early years provision.

Nottingham currently has nine children's centres and is expected have 16open by March 2008.

Provisional findings compared data from the Foundation Stage Profile forthe years 2006 and 2007 in children's centre areas and found that therehad been a rise of ten percentage points in children's scores for thecommunication, language and literacy Early Learning Goal.

The figures showed that the attainment of 181 children had improved inthis area.

Candida Brudenell, head of children's centres at Nottingham CityCouncil, told Nursery World, 'Given the levels of deprivation in someareas of Nottingham, the fact that we've had this jump isfantastic.'

Ms Brudenell attributed the gains to a number of factors, including theimplementation of an early reading development programme.

She added, 'Having children's centre teachers in place has enhancedprovision.'

Councillor Jane Urquhart, executive board member for children'sservices, said, 'Families may go to a centre for something that isnothing to do with educational attainment but where they come intocontact with other services that may benefit education.'
