Cheated nursery workers awarded back payments

Eight nursery workers have been awarded 6,500 in back pay after a minimum wage probe. A telephone call by the mother of one of the nursery nurses triggered a full-scale investigation by Leicester City Council and HM Revenue and Customs officers. They found that the city-based nursery was paying the eight staff, who were all working as nursery nurses, only 2 an hour.

A telephone call by the mother of one of the nursery nurses triggered a full-scale investigation by Leicester City Council and HM Revenue and Customs officers. They found that the city-based nursery was paying the eight staff, who were all working as nursery nurses, only 2 an hour.

Investigators are refusing to name the nursery, but have confirmed it is a private business and not part of a national chain. All the staff involved are female and aged between 18 and 21.

The underpayments were made between October 2004 and September of last year, but came to light only after the mother's whistleblowing phone call.
