Child database is put on ice for the second time

The launch of a database holding details of every child in England has been delayed for the second time, the Government announced last Thursday.

In a letter to the Select Committee for Children, Schools and Families, children's minister Kevin Brennan said the ContactPoint database wouldnow be launched in January 2009, three months behind its plannedintroduction.

The letter blamed problems with the database, which have beenhighlighted by recent testing of the system. It said more tests wereneeded before the system could be launched.

David Laws, Liberal Democrat shadow Children, Schools and Familiessecretary, said, 'Instead of delaying the launch, this intrusive projectmust be scrapped altogether. A recent independent review has alreadyundermined all of the Government's assurances that the database will besecure. The discovery of further technical issues does not bode well forthe future. The Government has proven itself untrustworthy with largedatabases containing sensitive data. Parents have every right to demandthat their children's personal details are not put at risk.'
