Child diabetes linked to common virus

A link has been discovered between a common virus and diabetes in children.

Scientists found signs of enteroviruses, which can cause diarrhoea and the common cold, in pancreatic tissue from 60 per cent of children with Type 1 diabetes.

The study, published in the journal Diabetologia, could pave the way to a vaccine to prevent Type 1 diabetes developing in young children.

For 25 years a pathologist from Glasgow, Dr Alan Foulis, took samples from children who had died up to a year after being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, because he believed that enteroviruses would be present.

Working with researchers from the Peninsula Medical School in south-west England and the University of Brighton, Dr Foulis has now been able to prove his theory after comparing the results he obtained from 72 children with samples from 50 children without the condition.
