Child Health: Drug education to start in Year One

Children as young as five will be taught about drugs in their first year at primary school, under new plans unveiled by the Government last week.

The ten-year anti-drugs strategy involving the Home Office, theDepartment of Health and the DCSF, aims to prevent abuse and helpaddicts to stop. It will also focus on families where parents misusedrugs, intervene early to prevent harm to children, prioritise parents'access to treatment where children are at risk, provide intensiveparenting guidance and support family members such as grandparents whotake on caring duties.

In Key Stage 1 children will learn about being safe with medicines andhousehold substances, and making healthy choices.
