Child Poverty Bill spells out official duties

A landmark bill published last week will make it a legal duty for Government, local authorities and other organisations to help end child poverty across the UK.

The Child Poverty Bill requires the Government, local authorities andpartner organisations, such as the NHS, to work together and supportfamilies in order to meet the goal set by former Prime Minister TonyBlair in 1999 to eradicate child poverty by 2020.

It comes after figures released by the Department of Work and Pensionslast month revealed that it will be almost impossible to meet theGovernment's target to reduce child poverty by half by 2010, asstatistics show the number of children living in poverty remainsunchanged from last year (News, 14 May).

Kate Green, chief executive of the Child Poverty Action Group, said,'The bill is a major step in the fight to end Britain's child povertyand means government action is no longer optional.
