Child poverty figures

Around 1.6 million children are living in poverty in the UK, according to research by Save the Children.

The charity's annual report, which for the first time breaks downfigures by local authority, reveals that Manchester has the highestproportion of child poverty, followed by the London Borough of TowerHamlets. Wales has the greatest number of children living in poverty at14 per cent, while England has 13 per cent. The charity is now callingon the Chancellor to announce an emergency plan in the next budget tocreate jobs in the poorest areas and increase financial support forlow-income families.
