New poverty rate revealed

Nearly 1.3 million children in the UK are living in severe poverty, according to new figures from Save the Children.

The charity found that one in ten children living in families with twoparents and one child have an average income of 7,000, comparedwith the national average of 19,000.

This equates to having 19 a day for bills, food, clothes, washing, transport and health needs, as well as activities for childrenand other essentials.

The charity has used a new measure to estimate severe poverty bycombining household income figures with adult and child deprivationdata. It suggests that 10 per cent of children are missing out on basicneeds like a warm house, having a proper diet or going on schooltrips.

Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of Save the Children UK, said, 'Wecan't let these children slip below the radar. They're the children whoare hardest to reach, need the most help and the greatest investment tolift them out of poverty.'
