Child poverty: Poverty target 'still needs 4bn'

Children's charities have welcomed the creation of a new child poverty unit (News, 1 November), but said the Government must invest an additional 4bn annually to end child poverty by 2020.

Hilary Fisher, director of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, said, 'Itis clear that we need a 4bn investment in tax credits andbenefits. The creation of this new group should not prevent that frommoving forward.'

Emma Knights, joint chief executive of the Daycare Trust, said, 'The newunit will mean departments across local and central government workingtogether. This will be an ideal opportunity to tackle some of the realgaps in policy that are undermining the goal of halving child poverty by2010.'
