Childcare needs its campaigners

Anyone who has tried to juggle earning a living with raising a family knows that all too often, money is tight and time is short. Sadly, for many years, politicians and policymakers just weren't listening. But finally, things are starting to change. In recent years, this Government has invested heavily in childcare, recognising and responding to the everyday challenges families face.

I've never had to convince a working mother about the importance of good quality, affordable childcare. Anyone who has tried to juggle earning a living with raising a family knows that all too often, money is tight and time is short. Sadly, for many years, politicians and policymakers just weren't listening. But finally, things are starting to change. In recent years, this Government has invested heavily in childcare, recognising and responding to the everyday challenges families face.

At the turn of the century I chaired 4Children's Childcare Commission, which travelled the country speaking to children, parents and employers to find out what they needed and how the Government could help. Hearing the daily struggles faced by mums and dads trying to make ends meet and do the best by their children was the best lesson in policymaking I've ever had.
