Childcare reps left out of study

* An team investigating occupational segregation between the sexes in a range of professions has met for the first time - but without a representative from the childcare sector. A spokeswoman for the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), which launched the probe into why certain jobs are dominated by gender, said the DfES and the Sector Skills Development Agency had been approached to nominate someone from the childcare sector to the inquiry's advisory board, but so far had not submitted a name.

The 'No More Jobs for the Boys or Jobs for the Girls' investigation was set up in June to examine gender segregation among modern apprentices in five sectors - childcare, construction, plumbing, engineering and ICT.

According to the EOC, men account for 99 per cent of apprenticeships in construction and 96 per cent in engineering, while 97 per cent of childcare apprentices are women.
