Childcare tax credit element of Working Families Tax Credit

The Scottish Executive is considering ways of implementing Chancellor Gordon Brown's proposal in this year's Budget to extend the childcare tax credit element of Working Families Tax Credit to parents using childcare in their own homes. In England the proposal is currently the subject of a formal consultation, which finishes on 31 August and is available on www.dfes.gov.uk/consultations. The consultation paper, Supporting the cost of home-based childcare, set out plans to introduce payment for 'home childcarers', but said that nannies would be excluded unless they first become registered childminders.
