Childcare unit off to new start

The Government unit overseeing childcare, early years and Sure Start provision in England has been re-named the Sure Start unit. The 'rebranding' of the unit was announced yesterday (Wednesday) at the National Sure Start, Early Years and Childcare Conference in the QEII conference centre in Westminster. Led by Catherine Ashton, it is an interdepartmental unit between the Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions.

The DfES said the idea behind the rebranded unit was to bring together early education, childcare, health and family support services to help give every child the best start in life, and to ensure that every parent has access to affordable, good-quality childcare and family support. In order to do so, the Sure Start unit would be working with local authorities, NHS Primary Care Trusts, Jobcentre Plus, communities and organisations in the private and voluntary sectors.
