Childcarers line up for starry awards

Childcarers will be singled out for praise at a star-studded gala dinner at the Savoy in London next week. The Excellence in Childcare Awards, run by the Kids' Clubs Network in association with Nursery World and Prima magazines, cover four categories - Childcarer of the Year, Playworker of the Year, Best Out-of-School Club and Most Creative Activity. Winners will receive generous holiday and cash prizes donated by Pearl, jmc, Asda and Nestle.

Three candidates are shortlisted for Childcarer of the Year. Samantha Morris is a classroom support worker at Ammanford Infants School in Carmarthenshire and a leader at its after-school learning club and in her spare time runs the Junior Gateway Club for children with special needs. Childminder Jenny Irving specially transformed her garden in Huby, Leeds, into a haven for children to play and learn. Estelle Wright, a childminder for 18 years, works with her husband in Okehampton, Devon, to provide daycare and out-of-school care.
