Childminders rise to new regulations

Most childminders in Wales are now meeting regulation requirements, amid a continued rise in daycare standards across the country, according to the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW) annual report. Rob Pickford, chief executive of CSIW, said, 'The most significant improvements in Wales are in daycare services for under-eights.

Rob Pickford, chief executive of CSIW, said, 'The most significant improvements in Wales are in daycare services for under-eights.

Childminders now largely meet the requirements of the regulations.

Improvements were also achieved in full-day care, sessional care, open access play provision and creches, and there was significant progress in out of school care.'

The CSIW began a major regulation reform process this year and conducted a pilot of modified inspection procedures for childminders. Inspection procedure changes were introduced in April (News, 13 April).

Mr Pickford said, 'For under-eights services progress is being reflected in the new proportionate approach to regulation, which has already resulted in 1,000 fewer inspections this year. Where services show clear signs of improvement, we have been able to respond by reducing the intensity of regulation.'
