Children are news victims

* Children are portrayed as victims in nearly one in three news stories, claims a global study of newspaper coverage. The study, conducted in 24 countries by the World Association of Newspapers, found that 33 per cent of stories related to children as victims. The report's co-authors, Magne Raundalen, director of research for children programmes at the Centre for Crisis Psychology in Bergen, Norway, and Jan Vincens Steen, Newspapers in Education manager for the Norwegian Media Businesses Association, said that it 'provides a reminder that coverage of children may easily become focused on limited issues'.

The study found 'children in schools' featured in one in five (20 per cent) stories. Other categories were 'children are brilliant' (17 per cent), 'children in politics' (10 per cent), 'children as wrongdoers' (8 per cent) and 'children helping others' (4 per cent).
