Children are to be taught road safety

Children are to be taught road safety skills by volunteers being trained to work at primary schools in England. The 3m initiative will see local authorities recruit and train people to teach five-to seven-year-olds about crossing roads and other safety skills. They are expected to begin work in the summer term 2003. There are similar projects in Scotland and Wales. In 2001 there were 2,608 road accidents involving five-to seven-year-old pedestrians across Britain, resulting in 16 fatalities.
