Children take one picture

Nursery children from Chichester are among those taking part in a nationwide schools art project organised by the National Gallery in London.

Every year the 'Take One Picture' scheme uses one painting as a startingpoint for primary and nursery-age children to explore learning acrossthe curriculum. This year's painting is Renoir's 'Les Parapluies'.

At Oakwood School in Chichester, West Sussex, the project involvedchildren from the nursery up to Year 6.

Head of Little Oaks nursery, Gemma Woods, said, 'We talked through thepicture in circle time and looked at what clothes the people werewearing. We did sponge painting on giant patchwork umbrellas and enjoyedlots of water play. We talked about floating and sinking and made a raingauge for the garden.'

At the end of the week the school's 265 pupils took their brollies on tothe school field to make a giant umbrella shape.
