Children take the bus to storytime

Children arrived at Jessie Porter Nursery School in Dundee one day recently to find a big, colourful bus parked outside. The bus is an integral part of the WORDS project which aims to increase participation in literature events throughout Dundee. Its remit is to reach those who would not normally have participated in such events, and to promote a love of reading and a broadening of reading habits in people of all ages.

The bus is an integral part of the WORDS project which aims to increase participation in literature events throughout Dundee. Its remit is to reach those who would not normally have participated in such events, and to promote a love of reading and a broadening of reading habits in people of all ages.

The scheme's Reader in Residence is Emma Turnbull, who says the project so far has been very successful and enjoyable.

Following the pattern she has used in nurseries throughout the city, she took the Jessie Porter children into the bus in small groups for a special storytime session with plenty of opportunities for participation, followed by a session with quizzes and worksheets.
