Children's centre is star of national exhibition

A fully operational children's centre will be open for business at the first National Children's Centre and Extended School Show to be held in London next week.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes is to open the event, with more than40 exhibitors and workshops run by the National College of SchoolLeadership and the Children's Workforce Development Council, amongothers.

The children's centre, being managed by 4Children, is based on the firstto cater for children and young people from birth to 19, whose servicesinclude a 49-place nursery, support for teenage parents, parentingclasses, health services and alternative education for teenagers who areexcluded from school.

Tracy Lindsell, manager of the Carousel Children's Centre in Braintree,Essex, said, 'We're trying to reproduce what we do on a smaller scale togive an idea of what we do.'

Charlotte Goddard, editor of Children Now, which is running the show inpartnership with 4Children and ContinYou, said, 'As well as offeringpractical information from key players, the event will provide a greatopportunity to come together as a sector and share ideas and goodpractice.'
