Children's centres to qualify in leadership

Senior staff working in children's centres in England can embark on a new qualification from this autumn. The National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership is being led by the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) in partnership with the Pen Green Leadership Development Centre in Corby, Northamptonshire.

The National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership is being led by the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) in partnership with the Pen Green Leadership Development Centre in Corby, Northamptonshire.

It has developed out of an advanced level course at Pen Green with practitioners, heads and deputies in different multi-disciplinary early years settings and services.

Dr Margy Whalley, director of Pen Green, said, 'Leadership for integrated centres is pivotal because it underpins the delivery of coherent services to children, young people and families in the community.'

A 35-place pilot course will start in September and run to July 2005. Dr Whalley said that around half of the participants would come from children's centres and the rest would include staff from nursery schools, extended schools and Neighbourhood Nurseries. They will be able to choose either a study programme or a research project.
