The Early Excellence Centre will be one of a network of six regional leadership centres offering training to heads, deputies and other practitioners involved in Sure Start programmes, children's centres and Neighbourhood Nurseries. The other five regional leadership centres are in Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Tyneside and Somerset.
Pen Green's new training centre, developed with funding from the Department for Education and Skills, was launched on 15 March. The training provision will also be available to aspiring leaders and senior staff from extended schools.
Margy Whalley, Pen Green's director of research, training and development, and co-ordinator of the leadership training group for the DfES, said the training centre would be a valuable resource for the local community and for students both regionally and nationally. She said, 'For the past 15 years we've been delivering training in a gym equipped with uncomfortable chairs. We now have a large library and a new home for the first research base in an integrated Early Excellence Centre.'
