Children's strategy takes its first steps

The first step towards the development of a children's strategy for Northern Ireland was taken last week at a workshop in Belfast. At the workshop, 'A Vision for All Our Children', organised by the Children and Young People's Unit in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, members of the four Children's and Young People's Committees and the Child Care Partnerships met to map out ways of making the children's strategy a reality.

At the workshop, 'A Vision for All Our Children', organised by the Children and Young People's Unit in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, members of the four Children's and Young People's Committees and the Child Care Partnerships met to map out ways of making the children's strategy a reality.

Heather Stevens, head of the Children and Young People's Unit, said, 'There was a lot of discussion about the fact that children should be valued as children and that should be supported and recognised by the Government.'

The strategy, due out a year from now, will aim to provide a common goal and vision for all the Government departments to work towards. It will take into account the views of young children obtained from a range of childcare organisations throughout Northern Ireland.
