In brief...Work to develop a new children's strategy

Work to develop a new children's strategy for Northern Ireland will begin in the coming year, Denis Haughey, minister in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, told delegates at PlayBoard's annual conference last week. He also said there was a commitment to bringing legislation before the Northern Ireland Assembly in the New Year to enable a Children's Commissioner to be appointed by next June. Mr Haughey said, 'We want our children's strategy to improve the well-being and the future of the children of the whole community, throughout Northern Ireland. We intend to consult widely on this next year and we will be seeking views from individuals and children's organisations, and children themselves.'
