Chinese lanterns

Get ready for Chinese new year on 24 January by making your own lanterns. Resources

Paint, PVA glue, balloons, washing-up bags (that come with washing-up tablets), Vaseline, wool

Step by step

* Cover the balloon with a thin layer of Vaseline.

* Blow up the balloon inside the washing-up bag and then tie a knot.

* Mix the paint with a little PVA glue and get the children to paint the bags.

* Hang the bags up to dry.

* When the paint is dry, help the children to pop the balloons. The bag should have dried hard and kept its shape.

* Get the children to wind some wool around a piece of card. Help them to cut and tie the wool to make a tassel.
