Comfort and joy

Research by the Children's Society into what children want from out-of-school clubs can help make provision child-friendly, says Sue Virgo, who points out that feeling comfortable and safe are young consumers' priorities. 'Comfy chairs and sofas', 'a place to chill out and eat lots of food' and 'everything apart from bad people and bad things'. This is what children and young people are asking for most in out-of-school childcare. Whereas most of us involved in making provision for children and young people have assumed it is what we give them to do that interests them, my research has found that when children are asked for their views they show our assumptions are wrong. Children are saying that the environment in which they spend or could spend out-of-school time is more important than the activities. Feeling safe and comfortable are their priorities, along with a choice of food.
