Commissioner demanded for all EU children

Leading children's charities the NSPCC and Save the Children are calling on the European Union to develop a children's rights policy to protect Europe's 94 million children and young people. Leading children's charities the NSPCC and Save the Children are calling on the European Union to develop a children's rights policy to protect Europe's 94 million children and young people.

The call coincides with a new report by the European Children's Network, What about us? Children's rights in the EU, published on Monday, and available on www.nspcc.org.uk.

The report reveals that children and young people suffer more disadvantage, discrimination and abuse than other groups within the EU and raises concerns over cross-border child protection. The EU's open borders have made child sex trafficking easier and many offenders are not tracked as they move between countries.

The report recommends having an EU commissioner with specific responsibility for children, and ending the detention of young asylum-seekers and refugees.

Diane Sutton, NSPCC head of policy and public affairs, said, 'With the UK currently holding the EU presidency this is the perfect time for the Government to ensure that the protection of children's rights is included in the presidency conclusions.'
