Council finds cash for stalled centres

Two children's centres put on hold beca'se of a shortfall in Government funds have been rescued by the local authority. The London borough of Richmond upon Thames was forced to reconsider three planned purpose-built centres after allocated Government funds fell short of the cost by 655,000 (News, 22 February). The proposed centres at Heathfield Infants School in Richmond and St Richard's School in Ham are now at the planning application stage since the council put in 300,000 originally meant for a third site at Lowther Primary School in Barnes.

Plans for the Barnes centre remain frozen, but the council has ring-fenced 300,000 for the project. The council said that completing the initial scheme would depend on further children's centre funding being allocated by the DfES.
