Councils can go online to steer centres

The children's centre programme could be given a boost by a new range of online materials providing practical advice and guidance for local authorities designed by the Together for Children consortium (TfC). The consortium is a partnership of children's services organisations including Serco, 4Children and ContinYou, which was awarded the children's centre contract until September 2008 to support local authorities in the planning and delivery of children's centres (News, 5 October 2006).

The Government is aiming to have 2,500 children's centres established by March 2008 and 3,500 by 2010.

Speaking at a Capita conference on planning and practice in children's centres last week, TfC programme director Liz Railton said, 'The idea behind Together for Children is that by working together we can be the answer to every need.

'Also, Together for Children is an acknowledgement that local authorities are entitled to support, as the delivery of children's centres is a huge programme that brings lots of challenges, with very tight timescales.
