Councils show how to beat child poverty

A report showing how London boroughs are working to eradicate child poverty has been published by London Councils. Tackling Child Poverty in London: A guide to borough initiatives and good practice profiles a range of initiatives, including how boroughs are helping parents to find good quality, affordable childcare and, in some cases, offering subsidised childcare while parents receive training and re-enter the workplace.

The Instant Creche Company in Islington, which has a pool of 20 creche workers, reaches out to communities experiencing social and economic isolation. Since its launch a year ago, it has created at least 60 new childcare places through the Ofsted registration of ten new sites.

Hammersmith and Fulham's Childcare Brokerage project offers parents returning to work one-to-one guidance on the range of childcare available locally. The Childcare Support Scheme in Southwark aims to support low-income parents with childcare costs while they access education or employment.
